  • 1 big mugful red lentils, rinsed
  • 1 big mugful white rice
  • 3 mugfuls water for lentils
  • 2 mugfuls water for rice
  • 1 glug neutral oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 dollop tomato paste
  • 1 pinch turmeric powder
  • 1 fingertip-pinch cumin seeds
  • 2 pinches salt
  • 2 handfuls shredded lettuce or cabbage for garnish
